Psalm 53

New International Version

Psalm 53^[a]^(A)

For the director of music. According to mahalath.^[b] A maskil^[c] of David.

¹The fool^(B) says in his heart,
“There is no God.”^(C)
They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
there is no one who does good.

²God looks down from heaven^(D)
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,^(E)
    any who seek God.^(F)
³Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt;
    there is no one who does good,
    not even one.^(G)

⁴Do all these evildoers know nothing?

They devour my people as though eating bread;
    they never call on God.
⁵But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    where there was nothing to dread.^(H)
God scattered the bones^(I) of those who attacked you;^(J)
    you put them to shame,^(K) for God despised them.^(L)

⁶Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When God restores his people,
let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

The Day of Atonement^(A)

²⁶The Lord said to Moses, ²⁷“The tenth day of this seventh month^(B) is the Day of Atonement.^(C) Hold a sacred assembly^(D) and deny yourselves,^[a] and present a food offering to the Lord. ²⁸Do not do any work^(E) on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God. ²⁹Those who do not deny themselves on that day must be cut off from their people.^(F) ³⁰I will destroy from among their people^(G) anyone who does any work on that day. ³¹You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance^(H) for the generations to come, wherever you live. ³²It is a day of sabbath rest^(I) for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.”^(J)

The Festival of Tabernacles^(K)

³³The Lord said to Moses, ³⁴“Say to the Israelites: ‘On the fifteenth day of the seventh^(L) month the Lord’s Festival of Tabernacles^(M) begins, and it lasts for seven days. ³⁵The first day is a sacred assembly;^(N) do no regular work.^(O) ³⁶For seven days present food offerings to the Lord, and on the eighth day hold a sacred assembly^(P) and present a food offering to the Lord.^(Q) It is the closing special assembly; do no regular work.

³⁷(“‘These are the Lord’s appointed festivals, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies for bringing food offerings to the Lord—the burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings^(R) required for each day. ³⁸These offerings^(S) are in addition to those for the Lord’s Sabbaths^(T) and^[b] in addition to your gifts and whatever you have vowed and all the freewill offerings^(U) you give to the Lord.)

³⁹“‘So beginning with the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after you have gathered the crops of the land, celebrate the festival^(V) to the Lord for seven days;^(W) the first day is a day of sabbath rest, and the eighth day also is a day of sabbath rest. ⁴⁰On the first day you are to take branches^(X) from luxuriant trees—from palms, willows and other leafy trees^(Y)—and rejoice^(Z) before the Lord your God for seven days. ⁴¹Celebrate this as a festival to the Lord for seven days each year. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come; celebrate it in the seventh month.

Threefold Hallelujah Over Babylon’s Fall

19 After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude^(A) in heaven shouting:

“Hallelujah!^(B)
Salvation^(C) and glory and power^(D) belong to our God,
² for true and just are his judgments.^(E)
He has condemned the great prostitute^(F)
who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.
He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”^(G)

³And again they shouted:

“Hallelujah!^(H)
The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”^(I)

⁴The twenty-four elders^(J) and the four living creatures^(K) fell down^(L) and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:

“Amen, Hallelujah!”^(M)

⁵Then a voice came from the throne, saying:

“Praise our God,
all you his servants,^(N)
you who fear him,
both great and small!”^(O)

⁶Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude,^(P) like the roar of rushing waters^(Q) and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:

“Hallelujah!^(R)
    For our Lord God Almighty^(S) reigns.^(T)
⁷Let us rejoice and be glad
    and give him glory!^(U)
For the wedding of the Lamb^(V) has come,
    and his bride^(W) has made herself ready.
⁸Fine linen,^(X) bright and clean,
    was given her to wear.”
